On Forms

Vases, Vertis, Twisted Abstracted Strip Vases and Solid Vase Forms

The pieces in these series are designed to investigate the vase in a personal, innovative way. The pieces are based on interests in concept, design, drafting and fabrication. They are one segment of ongoing series directed towards investigating visual relationships involved in vase making. Included are planar, proportional, oplumetric, reflective and decorative descriptions.

Traditionally, vases were made for utilitarian purposes. As craft and skill improved, decorative elements were added to enhance their visual image. Through history the vase has maintained a rigid concept of decoratively containing volume.

These pieces strive towards analyzing other possible orientations and interpretations of a vase. Do vases have to have a hole? Is the vase silhouette necessarily mirrored exactly on the inside? Can horizontal or vertical planes describe volume? These and many other questions are pursued as I continue to work on these series. I hope that a description of this kind will give you, the viewer, some idea of my intentions. Hopefully this will increase the enjoyment of these pieces.
